A PR stunt gone awry provides case study for free Verizon webinar on how small business can profit from public relations.
San Diego, CA, June 08, 2010 -- The idea was to drag a stuffed dummy through the sky behind an old biplane—apparently a wingwalker who slipped. But what if the dummy fell in the woods or, worse, on a busy highway? "The stunt never got off the ground," says Tom Harnish the guy behind the not-so-bright idea. "As the lead presenter in an upcoming online seminar on PR it made sense to practice what we preach and use a PR stunt, but in this case it didn't fly."
Kate Lister says, "I'm a PR slut. I'll do anything to attract attention--almost." But when the stunt flopped she was undaunted. "We didn't get the press hit we hoped," she said, "but it makes a great case study for the free webinar Tom and I will be presenting on Wednesday June 9th."
It could have been worse. A German company thought it would be a great idea to drop candy from a biplane. But that stunt not only flopped, it backfired. They got lots of press, worldwide in fact. The articles were about all the people who complained after they were bombed with chocolate.
The webinar will focus on how to craft a story that's different, how to communicate it to people who are interested, how to help reporters do their job, and how to use PR to make more money, land a job or promotion, or even titillate your spouse.
