Alba Spectrum Great Plains eEnterprise Upgrade, Migration, Support

Prior to the days, when Great Plains Software was acquired by Microsoft (to form Microsoft Great Plains Business Solutions, later renamed simply to Microsoft Business Solutions and later on to Microsoft Dynamics subdivision) eEnterprise was high-end or luxury version of Great Plains Dynamics, this was applicable to versions 6.0, 7.0, on earlier versions it was known as Dynamics C/S+. Later on eEnterprise became Great Plains Professional (while low profile version on Pervasive SQL 2000 and Ctree, and later on MSDE 2000 was known as Great Plains Select, on version 7.5)

1. What are my options if I am still on Great Plains eEnterprise 7.0? Well, Corporate ERP systems, O/S technology, MS SQL Server are not something engraved in the stone. Great Plains eEnterprise was available on Windows 2000 Server and MS SQL 2000. Currently (September 2010) we have Windows 2008 Server (including 64 bit version) and MS SQL Server 2008. The most dramatic changes are probably from the SQL Server side, where such new technologies, as XML stored procedures, new password encryption and forcing strategy (plus tighter synchronization with Windows domain user security features). We recommend you to consider upgrade all the way to Dynamics GP 2010/11.0 or at least version 10.0, where you can buy yourself at least several years of compliance with progressing Microsoft technologies

2. The migration. Here we assume that you are walking away from Great Plains eEnterprise to another ERP application (possibly o the way up to upscale to Oracle eBusiness Suite, PeopleSoft, or on the way of downsizing to PeachTree, Accpac, QuickBooks). eEnterprise was available on MS SQL Server platform and it is reasonably simple routine to export master records, work and historical transactions from MS SQL to something like tab or comma delimited text files or even establish ODBC connection to convert data from the source database

3. eEnterprise and international Corporate ERP market. Great Plains Software was active participant in Corporate ERP application offer in Europe, Latin America, Africa, South East Asia, Russia (in the countries, where English is the language of the business). When Microsoft arrived on the scenes, it downplayed all the ERP platforms, except Axapta (Dynamics AX) and partially Navision (Dynamics NAV)
