Biobutanol is an attractive bioproduct and a second generation biofuel. Last week, Eastman Chemical Company acquired TetraVitae Biosciences, a leading developer of biobutanol.
Columbia, SC, November 14, 2011 -- Last week, Eastman Renewable Materials, LLC a subsidiary of Eastman Chemical Company quietly announced acquisition of TetraVitae Biosciences, Inc and its assets. TetraVitae is a developer of biobutanol and bioacetone. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
“We at Biobutanol.com see this acquisition as validation of industrial biotechnology and biobutanol. Eastman Chemical Company is a leading producer of n-butanol from petroleum and by purchasing TetraVitae Biosciences’ technology add a sustainable biobased production route for n-butanol,” said Sam Bhargava, publisher of Biobutanol.com website. “I am confident that Eastman will be able to commercialize TetraVitae’s technology at a faster pace and can further gain advantages in production of other biobased products”
Biobutanol finds applications as a 2nd generation biofuel with higher energy density than ethanol. More importantly, biobutanol is an industrially important chemical used in production, formulation and processing of plastics, paints and pharmaceuticals.
Biobutanol.com is an independent website covering markets and technology relating to biobased butanol. Biobutanol is expected to be a large commercial bioproduct and a second generation biofuel. Biobutanol.com has recently partnered with an industry veteran to offer biobutanol consulting services. Site is maintained by Dr. Sam Bhargava.
