Crossing US borders and opening subsidiary in South America might be a challenging step. In any case homework seems to be required and we would like to help you with initial highlights. We are trying to compose this paper in the form of popular questions and answers. Expected readers are IT managers and controllers participating in decision making and accounting software selection. We have to admit that this paper is not technical and may look as ‘very dry’ to programmers and software developers. Actually we have to combine ERP technology with such ‘boring’ issues as Brazilian SPED and taxation formulas. Let’s begin:
Q. Why do we need to care about accounting system selection? In my opinion it is easy enough to deploy Microsoft Dynamics GP which is currently our Corporate ERP application in the office in Chicago
A. Well, first of all we have to notice that applications marketed and promoted in the United States might be not available internationally. Dynamics GP is not translated to Brazilian Portuguese at this time (May 2012) and we do not know about Microsoft plans to roll it out in Brazil. In 2005 Microsoft in Sao Paulo contracted our office to localize former Great Plains version 7.5. However project was later cancelled and currently Microsoft Dynamics AX is offered in the region
Q. SAP B1 seems to be popular in Sao Paulo and Campinas business district. We are also moving in there and our profile is auto parts manufacturing. There are reasons to expand in the area. First of all major auto makers are present including GM, Citroen and Fiat. Could you comment on Business One situation in the area?
A. At this time Brazil is self-sufficient country and it doesn’t depend on oil import from abroad. Real has long time appreciation story against US dollar and even Euro. Foreign investments are flourishing. Opening subsidiary is great idea but it is associated with compliance. Here you have to be ready to such compliances as SPED (Public Digital Bookkeeping System) and complex tax accrual formulas. Business One is localized but you have to expect additional consulting hours to implement this application
Q. Does it support Brazilian Portuguese in user interface and reporting?
A. Yes it does. Actually you can switch language directly in settings or associated it in defaults for your named user. BO is ASCII table compliant. Regarding reporting then it depends on what you are expecting. If you review American English version then you can probably expect the same reporting to be available in Portuguese (except US localization such as 1099 for example as it is not applicable). But regarding local legislation such as SPED then it is automated via ISV channel add-on. Our goal is to give you highlights for your homework
Q. We plan to open distribution facilities in Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Manaus, Recife and across the country. In other words it should be franchisee network. System should be customizable and easy deployable via internet. Are we looking in the right place?
A. System is customizable and you can add user defined tables and fields directly in client interface as well as add functionality by programming in Microsoft Visual Studio with Software Development Kit libraries and code samples
Q. Is it possible to get second opinion in Fortaleza as it seems like our implementation ‘went south’?
A. We have to admit that ERP implementation consulting success rate is below one hundred percent. This doesn’t mean that you project got to fail, but rather that it may fail or go into limbo. Second opinion is available. Feel free to call
Q. Our office in Campinas was screwed up with SB1 implementation. We deploy B1 in the headquarters in Atlanta Georgia. In our opinion there were no needs to budget several hundred of consulting hours to redesign our GL chart of accounts and setup our tax rates and formulas
A. Consider creating template with COA and naming conventions. Then roll them down to your overseas subsidiaries. Servers might be hosted in the Headquarters
Q. Is Citrix the answer for enabling user interface?
A. Yes as we think at this time. We see the trend toward ‘cloud computing’ where various options are available but dependent on chosen partner
