Fashions of the '80s are explored in the V&A's new exhibition, reports LondonTown.com
June 25, 2013, 9:14 am -- /EPR NETWORK/ -- From stone washed jeans to bat wings and puffball skirts to shoulder pads, the 1980s were rife with experimental fashion trends. Opening on the 10th July 2013, the Victoria and Albert Museum's latest exhibition, From Club to Catwalk: London Fashion in the 1980s, takes a step back in time to explore these intriguing choices. Visitors travelling from outside of London can make the most of their visit by booking one of many cheap London hotels nearby to the V&A, and other popular museums such as the Natural History and Science Museums, on LondonTown.com.
London's club scene exploded in the '80s and with that came the opportunity to express personality through fashion, to show off among peers and try to stand out from the crowd. Clubs such as Billy's, Blitz and the Club for Heroes started the clubbing days and Camden Palace and warehouse parties developed it, attracting more people and thus igniting a link between music, club and catwalk. It became a short hop from couture to club wear as fashion magazines i-D and Blitz promoted the trend for theatrical dressing.
The breakthrough of creativeness in London was owed to the city's arts education, which boasted top colleges such as St Martin's, the Royal College of Art and Hornsey College of Art. With designers given advanced training as well as the motivation to be individual, it wasn't long until the London fashion scene was noticed internationally. Fashion shows took place in New York and Japan, and a breakthrough event 'London Goes to Tokyo' highlighted the importance of young London designers.
Displaying more than 85 outfits, the Club to Catwalk exhibition will trace how theatricality in British fashion inaugurated and how London's vibrant and eclectic club scene had an influence on an entire generation of designers, encouraging the designs to reach the catwalks. Visitors will be able to step back in time to a world when designers like Betty Jackson, John Galliano and Vivienne Westwood ruled the catwalks.
