Updated version of 16th Century exploration of monarchical power
August 21, 2013, 8:48 am -- /EPR NETWORK/ -- Christopher Marlowe's Edward II is to run at the National Theatre this autumn. Directed by Joe Hill-Gibbins, the production offers audiences a modern take on the play, which explores the corrupting influence of power.

Originally performed in 1592, the story follows the ineffectual, effete King has he recalls his 'favourite' courtier Gaveston from exile, lavishing him with unearned titles, land and riches, and alienating the powerful barons and bishops not to mention his Queen - in the process. The sexual obsession between the pair, combined with Edward's impetuous style of rule, ultimately leads to the King's downfall.

The play has been revived many times since its debut, and is considered an erotic, violent masterpiece. John Effernan takes the title role his first lead part at the National and Vanessa Kirby stars as the cuckolded Queen Isabella. Gaveston is played by Kyle Soller, winner of the 2011 'Outstanding Newcomer' award from the Evening Standard.

The production, which runs from August 28th until October 26th, is to be staged at the Olivier Theatre, the largest of the National's three auditoriums. A special Travelex offer means 12 tickets are available for 500 seats at each performance. Standard ticket prices go up to 48.

LondonTown.com is offering a number of discounts on cheap London hotels close to the National Theatre for the duration of the run. The luxury Savoy is among the deals, with double rooms available from 276 per night a 39% discount on the standard rate.

A few minutes' walk from the National, the London Marriott Hotel County Hall is offering double and twin rooms with river views from 296 per night, which is a 20% reduction on the standard rate.
