Mark Rylance’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ is a highlight of a new season of shows
August 27, 2013, 2:43 pm -- /EPR NETWORK/ -- A new season of must-see shows starts in London this September with big name stars Vanessa Redgrave and James Earl Jones, who last performed together in ‘Driving Miss Daisy', starring in ‘Much Ado About Nothing' directed by Mark Rylance at London's Old Vic Theatre. Theatre goers can book a hotel in London and find a restaurant near the show for an enjoyable night out in London.

Sheridan Smith and David Walliams also make a starry pairing in ‘A Midsummer Night's Dream', Sheila Hancock is in ‘Barking in Essex', and ‘Miranda' love interest Tom Ellis appears in ‘The Lyons' at the Menier Chocolate Factory.

There are three new high profile musicals opening in London in September 2013: ‘The Light Princess' written by Tori Amos; ‘From Here To Eternity', the first new musical in ten years from Tim Rice; and Roddy Doyle's ‘The Commitments' which makes its world premiere at the Palace Theatre in London's West End on 21st September 2013 under the director Jamie Lloyd.

Richard Eyre directs Henrik Ibsen's ‘Ghosts' at the Almeida Theatre, Vicky Featherstone directs ‘The Ritual Slaughter of Gorge Mastromas', her first full production since taking over as Artistic Director at the Royal Court theatre in Sloane Square , and ‘The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui' comes to London 's West End after a sell-out run at Chichester Festival Theatre.

The nine-day ‘London Design Festival' brings more than 300 events to London including exhibitions, installations, talks, workshops and discussions with events taking place across the city. The Endless Stair outside Tate Modern and the hub at the Victoria and Albert Museum are events which stand out from a packed programme.

Top designers and key players in the fashion industry flock to London for London Fashion Week while the London Fashion Weekend, which takes place the weekend after the main event, is the most accessible part and is open to the public.

In art news, Tate Modern hosts a solo show on Mira Schendel, the Royal Academy of Arts ‘Australia', and the Victoria & Albert Museum ‘Pearls'. Further art highlights include Jonathan Yeo's National Portrait Gallery exhibition, the Design Museum 's ‘Designers in Residence' and ‘Oliver Jeffers: Nothing to See Here'.

There's a carnival atmosphere in London this September with festivals like the London Mela, the excellent Kings Place Festival, the Mayor's Thames Festival and the London Open House Weekend, a weekend-long festival of architecture, taking place.

New festivals for September 2013 include the family friendly ‘Stratford Rising Festival' and the ‘Night Contact Festival' in Dalston which puts projected art and multi-media works.

The Hampstead & Highgate Literary Festival includes new elements, Kidsfest and Poetry in the Park, both taking place on Sunday, and top authors and celebrities confirmed for the festival include Ruby Wax, Nick Ross, Baroness Gillian Shephard, Mark Billingham, Tracy Chevalier, and Maggie O'Farrell.

The Colourscape Music Festival combines art with contemporary music on Clapham Common while Bermondsey Street Festival offers visitors a village fete in the city, and the Pearly Kings and Queens Harvest Festival welcomes the new season in button downed style.

The full programme for the 21st Raindance Film Festival will be announced on Tuesday 3rd September 2013, The Floating Cinema moves to Islington for the Angel Canal Festival on 1st September, and there are more mainstream film screenings at Kew the Movies which returns to the beautiful Kew Gardens following a successful debut last year.

On Saturday 7th September 2013 we bid farewell to the 2013 Proms at the ‘Last Night of the Proms' and ‘Proms in the Park' but there's more classical music later in the month with Nicola Benedetti and Beethoven's Ninth, both at the Royal Albert Hall. Simon Callow gets Inside Wagner's Head as part of the extended Deloitte Ignite festival which this year celebrates the bicentenaries of Verdi and Wagner, curated by Steven Fry.

There's a free concert every night of the month at the iTunes Festival at London's Roundhouse in Camden with stars like Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake and Jessie J playing. And there's more up tempo music from Pink Floyd's Roger Waters, the Manic Street Preachers, and from Emeli Sande, Rizzle Kicks and Ed Sheeran who are just some of the big name stars appearing at Unity, a concert for Stephen Lawrence.

In sport, National Paralympic Day combines elite competition with Liberty, London 's disability arts festival on Saturday 7th September 2013, the same day 300 boats take on the 21-mile course of The Great River Race which starts at London 's Docklands. England play Moldova in a World Cup Qualifier at Wembley Stadium on Friday 6 th September 2013.

The world class ITU World Triathlon Grand Final takes place at the scene of the Brownlee brothers' Olympic triumphs and you can try it yourself at Tri Together at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre. And, combining cycling and running, the London Duathlon returns to Richmond Park on Sunday 15th September. For a less serious ‘sport', hundreds of people put on a hairy gorilla outfit for the Great Gorilla Run on Saturday 21 st September 2013.
