All over the world, models are extending their careers past the traditional modelling ‘use by’ date by diversifying their talents and making smart choices.

England, UK, May 22, 2009 -- Many young people who dream of becoming a model image that after a few years of work their modelling career will be largely over. It’s a natural enough assumption, considering that most high profile models from the world of top fashion are in their late teens or early twenties.

The reality however is that the world of modelling goes far deeper than most people realise. In fact the majority of modelling jobs aren’t high fashion catwalk jobs at all. Every day thousands of models of all ages and ethnicities get work on shoots for advertising, brochures, stock photography, and hundreds of other jobs.

According to Tepparat Songkraw, Managing Director of Mode Management, Thailand’s largest modelling agency, when models manage their careers carefully and keep their mind open to learn new things, they can extend their modelling careers far beyond their twenties.

Mr Tepparat recommends that young models seek to learn new skills so they can supplement their modelling career with related work such as acting, singing, and TV work.

Damian O’Connor, Managing Director at one of the UK’s largest modelling agency, Models Direct, takes a similar view.

“Having additional skills and talents will have a massive impact on your modelling career,” says Mr O’Connor. “If you’re serious about building a career in modelling, you need to think creatively about what clients want, and what you can deliver. That way, you’ll have the best chance of finding the kind of work you’re after, of diversifying into different fields, and getting a good flow of modelling work.”

Many talented models can sustain a long career in modelling, says Mr O’Connor. “There’s more and more work for older models out there today. We hear from clients all the time who are trying to find a model in an older demographic to fit a brief.”
