Highlights include world premiere of new show by award-winning Theatre-Rites

June 10, 2013, 2:42 pm -- /EPR NETWORK/ -- With Beyond Barbican London's Barbican Centre stretches beyond the concrete walls of its Silk Street headquarters this summer to give visitors to London a series of pop-up events, site-specific shows, gigs and installations across east London so book a cheap London hotel to ensure you don't miss out on the festival atmosphere of this unique event.

‘Bank On It' (22nd June - 14th July), by the award-winning children's theatre company Theatre-Rites, is the Barbican's first off-site theatre production of the summer. This world premiere finds the humour behind what can be a scary and daunting topic through jokes and riddles for a 5+ audience.

The Theatre-Rites show is held in the iconic 1960s Rose Lipman building, a creative community art space in De Beauvoir, Haggerston, where, from 5th July 2013, Imelda Staunton (Sweeney Todd) and film star Toby Jones (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), both known for their roles in the Harry Potter film series, star in ‘Circle Mirror Transformation'. It will be the first Theatre Local production by Vicky Featherstone to open her first season as artistic director at the Royal Court theatre, staging productions outside of the theatre's Sloane Square home.

Australian contemporary circus company Circa – who are also performing their new show, ‘Beyond', at London Wonderground this summer from 10th to 23rd June – are behind the second Beyond Barbican off-site theatre piece, collaborating with I Fagiolini, the British vocal ensemble, in ‘How Like An Angel' at the historic Smithfield church, St Bartholomew the Great, from 25th to 28th June 2013.

‘The Paper Architect' (3rd to 21st July), the third and final Beyond Barbican theatre production, is presented by award-winning Bristol based husband and wife team Davy and Kristin McGuire and takes place at Corner of Leytonstone Library. It combines paper models and video projection to tell the enchanting tale of a lonely man who longs for a life he never led.

Argentine artist Leandro Elrich creates a major interactive art installation featuring the façade of a late nineteenth-century Victorian terraced house in Dalston. ‘Dalston House' (26th June to 4th August) is part of the 2013 London Festival of Architecture and is installed on a disused lot on Ashwin Street that has largely remained vacant since being bombed in WWII.

At Union Chapel in Highbury & Islington, The Gloaming will blend Irish folk music with the New York contemporary music scene when they perform on 19th June 2013.

In Gillett Square in Dalston, Dance Nations Dalston will create a carnival atmosphere on Saturday 13th July 2013 with a free day of live music and dance workshops for all ages and abilities. On the same weekend, the Shoreditch Festival (13th and 14th July) lights up Hoxton with the Barbican taking charge of Sunday's festivities, which include live music, theatre and dance as well as family-friendly events.

On the first anniversary of the London 2012 Games, from 27th to 28th July 2013, Beyond Barbican presents the Open East Festival at the north of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The festivities include storytelling from Discover Children's Centre, food stalls hosted by the Real Food Festival, the Art Car Boot Fair, and live performances by The Waterboys and by a Malian group including Amadou & Mariam.

Finally, in September, Open School East will oversee the opening of an art school and a communal centre in Hackney in an exciting new artistic, social and education initiative commissioned by the Barbican and east London arts venture Create London.
