Annual festival arrives as London experiences micro-brewing renaissance.

June 17, 2013, 11:22 am -- /EPR NETWORK/ -- Every year, the Great British Beer Festival takes over the Kensington Olympia exhibition centre, welcoming 55,000 visitors to sample 800 different ales, ciders and perries brewed in Britain as well as some from abroad. The festival, which takes place each August, offers a great chance for brewers to celebrate their produce, while allowing drinkers the opportunity to try beers that can be incredibly hard-to-find outside the regions in which they are made. Visitors hoping to attend the festival or any other event at Olympia should visit LondonTown.com, the best site for anybody that intends to book hotels near Olympia.

In previous years, the Great British Beer Festival has been dominated by the great brewing regions of the north-west, Yorkshire, Cornwall and Scotland, but in recent years London breweries have begun to fight back. While less than a decade ago there were only a couple of notable London breweries still remaining, there are now at least 30, with superb beer being made in every corner of the capital, from Redemption in Tottenham, Meantime in Greenwich, Sambrook's in Wandsworth, Kernel in Borough, Redchurch in Shoreditch and Brodie's in Leyton. The sudden popularity of real ales like Indian Pale Ale as well as favourable tax breaks for small breweries, have led to a brewing renaissance in a city that in the nineteenth century was one of the biggest beer producers in the world. And the Great British Beer Festival is central to this revival as it was while attending the festival in the 2000s and noting the lack of London beers that Sambrook's founder Duncan Sambrook decided to quit his job and start his own brewery – one of the very first new breweries to open in the capital.

Most of these breweries are still small affairs serving a limited number of adventurous pubs in their immediate area, but their reputation is growing fast and specialist pubs and bars like the Southampton Arms in Kentish Town and Brixton's The Lido Café are starting to take on stocks of the best of London's beers from breweries right across the capital. London has become a beer city once again.
