The ICA finds its groove with exhibitions that explore modern subcultures

Released on: October 30, 2013, 10:04 am
Industry: Travel
October 30, 2013, 10:04 am -- /EPR NETWORK/ -- The ICA has extended the run of its highly successful off-site project A Journey through London subculture: 1980s to Now , which the institute says inhabits an artistic space outside that of commercial galleries and museums. The project, which will remain open until 3 November 2013, occupies the vast first floor of The Old Selfridges Hotel and has already been visited by more than 13,000 people.

Focusing on the ‘subcultural actors of tomorrow', the futuristic tour transports visitors to a floor of the luxurious Selfridges hotel in 2040. Here, visitors explore a re-staging of an ICA exhibition from 2013 and are taken on a surreal tour that explores the last 30 years of London subculture.

It deploys over 50 vitrines, alongside video works, installations and billboard-sized images to bring together a wide range of multi-disciplinary practices including art, fashion, graphics, craft and design, highlighting the idea that distinct and differing art forms can exist in the same space at the same time.

Ultimately, it seeks to make connections between London's creative past and the present, asking, for example, whether early YBA are an extension of the 80s DIY culture; or whether there's a connection from Gilbert & George through the artist David Robilliard to Trojan and Leigh Bowery and from there to Alexander McQueen.

“Taking examples from art, fashion, design, architecture and dance, as well as nightclubs, restaurants and bars, we ultimately aim to illustrate a lineage of artistic endeavour that more often than not falls outside the preserve of commercial galleries and museums,” says Gegor Muir, the institute's executive director,” The ICA's concern being to develop the space between the two.”

Next month, the ICA is launching another exhibition that again to inhabit this niche. Teaming up with IDEA Books, it is presenting an exhibition that focuses on the cultural and social significance of Ibiza and its club scene in the early 1980s.

Ibiza: Moments In Love creates a picture of the island, through a collection of club posters, books and original photographs – items that aren't often found in art galleries.

The exhibition highlights the work of Yves Uro, a freehand illustrator and graphic artist of hundreds of posters for the legendary nightclub Ku; and Armin Heinemann, owner of Paulas Ibiza, a maverick fashion boutique based on the island. Uro and Heinemanns work was world class but created solely for local purposes and has rarely been exhibited before.
