Queen’s House gallery serves up a ghoulish feast of terrible tales from nautical history
LONDON, October 13, 2014 -- /EPR NETWORK/ -- As Halloween looms ominously on the horizon, Greenwich's Queen's House gallery promises to offer a particularly intriguing event for the ghoulishly curious. The Queen's House is one of several world-class galleries and museums in Greenwich, and for Halloween it will host Death In The Archives on 31st October, a special late-night event for macabre visitors. For those interested in the Queen's House and other Greenwich events, as well as the best hotels and restaurants in the area, see LondonTown.com, the website compiled by London experts that has the latest news and prices for a wide range of London hotels.

Death In The Archives will hurl visitors into a world of shipwrecks, disease, cannibalism and taxidermy, taking you on a journey of maritime madness, mutiny and murder. Hear about Captain James Cook who went further towards both the South and North Poles than any explorer before him, survived a shipwreck and Antarctic ice, and died on Hawaii in a skirmish with islanders. Discover the grim tale of Henry Peglar, a member of John Franklin's ill-fated expedition sent to discover the North West Passage who, driven mad by scurvy, wrote himself a series of remarkable notes that were found on his body after his death.

Then there is the tale of Cloudesley Shovell, who ignored his crew's navigational advice at his peril, taking many to their deaths on the rocks of the Scilly Isles, and losing his own life to a local woman, who murdered Shovell for his ring. Finally, follow the epic saga of Matthew Flinders' much-loved cat, Trim, who survived falling overboard, a shipwreck and imprisonment as a spy by the French, but then disappeared, probably eaten by hungry slaves. The tales will be accompanied by archive material from the gallery while there will also be taxidermy workshops, ‘Death Drawing' sessions and candlelit tours of the ongoing exhibition, The Art of Science and Exploration 1768 – 1780.
